How To Remove Paint From Wood Floors? You’ve just bought a beautiful piece of furniture and brought it home. The paint on the wood is still bright and clear, and no chipping or peeling away. Now, what do you do? You want to remove the color from your wooden floors without destroying them so you can start over with new ones. Well, it isn’t as hard as you think!

Here’s how to remove paint stains without damaging your floors; it takes a few simple household materials and some elbow grease. Read on – How To Remove Paint From Wood Floors?

1. Spray Paint:

If your paint is a clear coat spray paint, you’ll want to heat it with a hairdryer or heat gun. Use the hot air from the dryer to melt the paint away from the wood. As it starts to melt away, you’ll be able to scrape it off with a putty knife.

Just be careful not to put too much heat onto the wood because you don’t want to damage your floors. Apply enough heat so that the paint melts and scrapes right off – do not let any steam come up at all, as this can make your floors warp or crack!

2. Wash Out:

If your paint is flat or lacquer, you’ll want to wash the entire floor with a cleaning solution like CLR. Cleaning with just water will not remove the color from the wood. Once you finish washing the whole floor with your CLR solution, let it sit for about 15 minutes to soak in, and then use an old toothbrush to apply a little bit of dish soap to the wood.

Use a soft cloth as well – do not scrub! The dish soap will help lift any remaining paint residue from the wood, and that’s when you can scrape it off. If there is any soap residue left behind after washing it, use some mineral spirits or acetone to take care of it.

3. Sandpaper:

If the paint has been on for a long time, you may have to sand it off. Start with 0000 steel wool to remove the top coat of color, and then progress in grits until you get to the spirit that works for you.

Once you’ve sanded it down as much as possible without damaging your floors, use the same CLR solution or window cleaner from above to wash off all of the residue left behind. You can also try using some lacquer thinner or turpentine if needed – make sure to use eye protection!

4. Shellac:

If your floors have been painted with shellac, it is no longer a prevalent type of floor finish. Shellac can be removed by using a mixture of rubbing alcohol and turpentine (50/50 ratio) as a solvent to dissolve the shellac.

To prevent any damage to your floors, you will have to apply coats of shellac over itself and then sand down the newly applied shellac. Continue doing this until you get down deep enough into the wood. Sanding down shellac can take a lot of time, patience, and materials, so it may be better to hire a professional if you don’t have the time to do it correctly.

5. Cheaper Option:

If you’re looking for a cheaper way to remove paint from your floors, try using white vinegar! Spray the vinegar onto your feet and scrub it with an old toothbrush. It might take some elbow grease, but the results can be as good as a solvent like turpentine or acetone.

Just make sure you use caution when using anything like this on your floor just in case there’s some residue left behind that needs to be cleaned off afterward.

6. Use heat:

With all of the using chemicals and other things on your wood floors, it can be hard to tell if they are still in good shape. One way to check that out is by using a heat gun or hairdryer, but don’t let it sit on the wood for too long – just enough time to make sure that your floor is level. If there are any high spots (raised areas), you’ll need to fill those in first before painting them with a new coat of paint!

7. Glycerin:

Use glycerin to remove the top coat of paint, and it will soften your floors. You can do this by applying it to your wood with a roller or cloth, then rolling over it with a floor buffer (slowly). If there is any residue left behind, use an old toothbrush, material, and water to remove any leftovers.

8. Paper Towels:

Remove any loose residue by rinsing your floors with water and then dabbing them with paper towels. Then, use a damp sponge to wipe away excess moisture from your feet before drying completely.

9. Turpentine:

Turpentine is a solvent that will help remove paint from your floors. Apply turpentine with an absorbent pad or roll it on with a paint roller. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe off any residue left behind with a damp cloth.

10. Bleach:

Bleach is not suitable for your wooden floors, but some people find it the best solution for removing paint from them! Mix bleach and water (1:10 ratio) and then apply the answer to the affected area with either a brush or roller. Let it sit for at least 10 minutes before wiping off excess residue.
